Scholarship Gala

Dr. Edith Eva Eger

Psychologist, author and UTEP alumna Edith Eva Eger has turned the life lessons she learned as a Holocaust survivor into inspiration, helping others empower themselves and enrich their lives.

Eger was born in Hungary in 1928. At the age of 16, Eger and her family were sent to Auschwitz, a Nazi concentration camp where her parents lost their lives. Soon after seeing her mother go to the death chamber, Eger was tapped to perform a dance for Dr. Josef Mengele, the German officer and physician known as the “Angel of Death.”

Eger was saved in 1945 when an American soldier noticed her hand moving slightly among a number of dead bodies.

After the war, Edith moved to Czechoslovakia, where she met her husband. In 1949, the couple moved to the United States. Eger received her degree in psychology from The University of Texas at El Paso in 1969 and held a doctoral internship at William Beaumont Army Medical Center at Fort Bliss, Texas.

Now a much sought-after motivational speaker, Eger has a clinical practice in La Jolla, Calif., and holds a faculty appointment at the University of California, San Diego. She has authored numerous books and travels extensively to speak to groups in the United States and abroad.

Eger has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show and was the primary subject of a Holocaust documentary that appeared on Dutch National Television. She was honored as El Paso’s Woman of the Year in 1987 and received the California State Senate Humanitarian Award in 1992.
